The dark, mind-numbing corruption of the Roman Catholic church was blazingly illuminated recently in the Diocese of Kansas City. Local prosecutors had the courage to indict the Bishop (albeit only for a misdemeanor). You can read about it here.
In a country like Lebanon, religious affiliation is so deeply embedded in civic life that not claiming an identification with one of the three communities there, Jewish, Muslim, or Christian, is simply unthinkable. There’s the story of the university registrar at a Beirut school who was taking down information from an incoming student, and asked, “Jewish, Muslim, or Christian”? When the student protested, “None of the above — I’m an atheist,” the registrar didn’t even blink. “Jewish atheist, Muslim atheist, or Christian atheist”? he asked.
