If you’re innocent you have nothing to fear. If you’re fearful then you must not be innocent. For those in power it’s a self-justifying formula that is as useful today as it was during the Salem Witch Trials.
If you have been kidnapped off the street, drugged, flown to another country, tortured, and held indefinitely without trial, you are clearly not innocent.
